Why isn’t it called the Xbox 720?

Microsoft Xbox 720 might become a reality in 158 days as the software giant has started a countdown on its social media site to the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). E3 is the annual video game conference and show, which will be held at the Los Angeles Convention center between June 11-13, 2013.

Though nothing can be confirmed about the result of the countdown from Microsoft, but speculations are running wild about the next Xbox or Xbox 720 as E3 is a video game conference. The gaming console from the firm has been called by various names, which include Xbox Infinity and Xbox Loop.

Rumours about the specifications of the console have been parading in the market long before the company initiated the countdown on its social media site. The countdown was accompanied by amessage on the Major Nelson blog, which read, “And it’s on.” The firm also posted the games to be released in 2013.

Microsoft was also reported to buy the home entertainment technology startup R2 Studios leading to the speculations that the firm is amplifying its Xbox platform. The Surface tablet manufacturer was reported to outbid Apple and Google to acquire the studios, which will help Microsoft gain control over patents pertaining to electronic devices.

The price of the deal has not yet been declared and Microsoft declined to comment on the acquisition. Xbox 720 and PS4 have become the most awaited gaming consoles after the success of Nintendo Wii U. The timing of the release of the consoles will be the one to look out for.
